Custom motorcycles in Portugal: one-off builds by Iron Custom Motors

Iron Custom Motors builds one-off motorcycles in Cascais, Greater Lisbon. Bring a clear idea or three photos you keep coming back to; we turn them into a concept, engineer it on paper and build it, with scope, budget and timeline agreed in writing before the first bolt comes off. The brand has been building customs since 2010, the Cascais workshop opened in 2026, and the workshop is rated 5.0 on Google.

01 · What we build

Every project starts from a real motorcycle, not a catalogue. Most builds begin on one of these bases:

BMW Motorrad — old and new.

Classics — air-cooled bikes that can leave with a modern ECU hidden in the frame.

Japanese motorcycles — Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki.

Café racer, scrambler, bobber, bagger: examples of where a brief can go, not a menu. The style follows the owner and the base bike, in that order.

What a build can include: individual engineering (frame, geometry, ergonomics, mechanical and electronic systems) · paint and finishing (candy coats, pinstriping, airbrush, polished metalwork) · wiring and electronics (custom looms, hidden switches, a modern ECU on a classic frame) · mechanical work in depth (engine, gearbox, fuel system, cooling).

02 · How a project is born

1. Conversation. A sketch session with your references on the table. We look at the base bike and tell you honestly what is feasible and what is not worth the money.

2. Concept. One direction, drawn, with the parts that define it named. This is the moment to change your mind cheaply.

3. Engineering on paper. Frame, geometry, ergonomics, mechanical and electronic systems, a parts list, a timeline with milestones.

4. Build. In-house, with trusted partner shops for specific work. Each stage is documented, so you follow the progress rather than wait for the reveal.

5. Refine. Real-world testing, then adjustments. The bike leaves when it rides the way the concept said it would.

03 · Timeline and budget

There is no price list for custom builds. Instead:

The scope is written down — what changes on the bike and what stays. The budget and the timeline are agreed in writing before the build starts. Milestones mark the build, so you always know where the project stands. If the scope changes along the way, the document changes first, then the work.

The consultation is free, always, and it is the first step of every project.

05 · Pedigree

Winner of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building. BMW Motorrad Customizing Championship 2023. World record at Bonneville Speed Week 2017, class 350APS-VG.

The championship customs stand on permanent exhibition at the workshop, next to the rider lounge. Come and see them up close before you decide anything. Iron Custom Motors is an independent workshop, tied to no manufacturer.

06 · Where our riders come from

Cascais, Estoril, Oeiras, Sintra and Lisbon. The workshop sits in São Domingos de Rana; the first conversation usually starts on WhatsApp, so distance is rarely the problem.

FAQ

How much does a custom motorcycle cost?

There is no fixed price. The budget depends on the base bike, the scope and the parts, and you receive it in writing after the consultation, together with the timeline. The consultation itself is free. Nothing starts before you have agreed to both.

How long does a build take?

It depends on the scope, so we do not name a duration before the project is defined. The timeline and its milestones are written down before work begins.

Can you build on my own bike?

Yes. The consultation includes a technical assessment of your motorcycle and an honest answer on what it can carry. If a different base would serve the idea better, we say so.

Do you do paint or wiring only?

No. We take on complete projects only: paint, wiring and electronics are stages of a build, not separate services. For electrical repairs on a stock bike, see motorcycle service.

Is a custom motorcycle legal to register in Portugal?

A bike that is already registered in Portugal keeps its registration, and Portugal has no periodic technical inspection for motorcycles. What your specific project means for the paperwork is one of the things we go through at the consultation, before the scope is written.
